- Always carry a copy of your passport. Keep your passport in a safe place.
- Exchange money currency only at banks or approved change offices. Bank transactions require a passport (not copy).
- Ask for information at the front desk of your hostel about the safest and easiest transportation, especially during nighttime.
- Don’t leave your possessions unattended whenever you are in a public area.
- When using taxi services, verify that they are red colored with a yellow triangle printed on the doors. Make sure the meter is on when you start your trip.
- Use ATMs that are located in public, well illuminated areas. Don’t allow strangers to stand near you and avoid taking unsolicited help.
- In Costa Rica, a person from 18 years old is considered an adult.
Drive Safe in Costa Rica
- While driving or parking your car, lock the doors and keep the windows closed.
- Never leave money, credit cards, bags or valuables in the car.
- When possible, try to park in the parking garages, avoid the streets.
- Avoid stopping when a stranger asks you for a ride.
- If you need to check a map, do so in a public and secure area or ask a police officer for help. Do not stop in front of strangers.
- Traffic infractions are to be paid at banks, never directly to police officials.
- If you travel to areas far from your hostel or hotel, you must carry your passport and be cautious. If you stay within close range of your hostel o hotel, keep your documents in a safe box and carry a copy of your passport with all the relevant information.
